I attended church every week and a bible study group. I went through a phase in my teens when I was a Born Again Christian. The language used and the way the stories are told mirror the bible. Pullman writes The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ in a style similar to biblical stories. I think this structure works really well and helped me read this novel quite fast. They are all here in one form or another. The stories are so well-known listing them is redundant. There are millions of internet sites who can fill in the gaps. I won’t detail what stories Pullman retells here because there are many. The chapters were very short and retell some of the best known biblical stories. I like the way Pullman structures this surprisingly short novel. I have wanted to read The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ for ages since I read The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by José Saramago for a creative writing class earlier this year. The death of the other is not part of the story. This is the story of Jesus and his brother Christ, of how they were born, of how they lived and of how one of them died. Above all, this is a book about how stories become stories. His daughter mentioned in an interview that he was an alcoholic, that he “liked himself better when he was drunk” and would give lectures while drunk. He’s said that he’s a “complete scoundrel”. “I have nothing to sell” (I think in the context of not trying to convert people). He’s said he could be many things but this version of Alan Watts is the best for making money. He’s said things like “” and referred to himself as a “spiritual entertainer”. Over the course of listening to his lectures, I’ve found it hard to understand if he’s just a showman or a spiritual educator.
I discovered Alan Watts a couple years ago and I love listening to his lectures.
